Bio

Hi everybody. I am a musician from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

I come from a long line of musicians, including a great-grandfather who played the fiddle and a grandfather who played the fiddle and tenor saxophone.

My father, Richard D. Brown, Sr., is a retired music teacher and professional musician. He plays most of the woodwind instruments and at 82, is still gigging.

I began piano lessons at the age of 8 and played the clarinet in the school band, beginning in 4th grade. Like every other budding musician of my generation, I was greatly influenced by the arrival of The Beatles. I was 12 when I received my first guitar. I began playing the saxophone in high school so that I could play in the school jazz band.

I played my first professional gig in July of 1967 with a group made up of myself and several of my neighbor buddies. The band was aptly called The Nabourhood.

I received a degree in Music Education from Saint Francis College (in Fort Wayne) in 1974 and began giving private music lessons on all the single-reed woodwinds in 1975.

I continued to gig professionally, joining the American Federation of Musicians in 1977. I received a Masters Degree in Musical Arts from Ball State University in 1981. Shortly after, I went on the road with the pop/jazz group, Amethyst. Eventually, I settled back in Fort Wayne and began teaching privately full time. I also kept busy gigging in the area, spending long tenures with The Jay Fox Band and the classic rock band, Not My Kids. I also freelanced and did studio work.

In the late 1990′s I began to compose and record original tunes on a Yamaha SY55 synthesizer/sequencer. Some of those tunes are included in the free download section of this web site.

In 2000 I joined the oldies rock band, The Junk Yard Band. In 2001 I met my lovely wife, Kay. We married in 2002.

In 2008 Kay retired after 31 years at Lincoln Financial. I retired at the same time from my private teaching practice. I now organize most of my days around riding the exercise bike, practicing, composing and recording using my Zoom digital recorder.

I have always considered my life to be busy and satisfying. It is even more so now.
